Maria Mercedes Ferrey-Smith, 65, passed away November 23, 2016 surrounded by her family. Maria was born on October 28, 1951 in Bejucal, La Habana, Cuba where her mother was a homemaker and her father a butcher. As a teenager, she emigrated to the United States with her mother and attended Tampa Bay Vocational Technical High School graduating in 1970. From there she began a long career with GTE/Verizon in the telecommunications industry. After retiring from Verizon, she began another portion of her career with Brighthouse Networks from where she also retired after...



Maria Mercedes Ferrey-Smith, 65, passed away November 23, 2016 surrounded by her family. Maria was born on October 28, 1951 in Bejucal, La Habana, Cuba where her mother was a homemaker and her father a butcher. As a teenager, she emigrated to the United States with her mother and attended Tampa Bay Vocational Technical High School graduating in 1970. From there she began a long career with GTE/Verizon in the telecommunications industry. After retiring from Verizon, she began another portion of her career with Brighthouse Networks from where she also retired after several years. Maria was a devout Christian and never hesitated to share her faith; she was adventurous and truly loved life. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Maria was preceded in death by her father, Rogelio Ferrey and mother, Blanca Ferrey. She is survived by her daughter Jennifer Evenson-Young and son James Smith and their spouses; her four grandchildren Chloe Evenson, Marissa Young, Sophia Young, and Lukas Smith; brother Luis Ferrey, his spouse and children; her cousin Julia Brown and her family; her partner of five years, Bob Bruner, as well as two half siblings, nieces, nephews, and many cousins and friends. Services will be held at Garden of Memories, 4207 E. Lake Ave., Tampa, Fl 33610 on Wednesday, November 30th, 2016 at 11 a.m. Donations in her name can be made to the St. Jude Children’s Fund (reference name Maria Ferrey-Smith; James Smith can be notified of the donation) or Moffitt Cancer Center (reference name Maria Walker for Moffitt donations).
